There she be all waxed, polished, and ready to ship.

The request was for Approximately 12" x 4", but that

was not to be. Because of cracks and the starting size,

I ended up with 8 1/2" x 3". Enjoy Mr. and Mrs.

This is a great medium for keeping customers up to

date on an order. This, also, will be a great place to

show the recipient how it was made.

I chased that crack and lost it. I was able to get

to the point where I finished it. So all that is left

to do today shear it of of its base, sign it, and then

wax it.

And here is the final shape with the stem and foot on the bottom.

This photo shows the final sanding just before I add finish.

Here it is with the finish applied. I use Tung Oil

on these. It will sit over night and dry in the warm

house. The next day it will be sheared off of the

stem and then signed, buffed, and waxed.

Weedpot ... Not That Kind of Weed

I thought I would show you and a couple of friends

the progress of their order. A weedpot is actually for

dried flowers. It has a hole drilled into the top to accept

the dried flowers or a test tube for a single green flower.

I started with a blank 4 1/4" x 4 1/4" x 13"

It this point I've just knocked off the corners.

I have now turned it completely round.

This is what my arm looks like after a short while.

This could be a problem. The wood (Walnut) I had on hand

was a little greener than I thought. These cracks are a result

of moisture in the wood that dries out. So now I get to chase

the crack. Which means I turn the piece until the crack is

gone. When I drilled the hole water was on the drill bit when

I finished. I might have to glue up dry pieces I have on hand

and start again. I'll know later today. I thought I would let

it be last night to allow it to do what it will. Now it's back

out there to gitter done.

It Only Took 32 Years

That is one of two garage doors. The doors are

constructed of sheet metal. I finally insulated

the darn things. When you live in an area that

can see over night temperatures as low as -20

degrees, it's down right silly to wait 32 years to

insulate. Oh well, no door shall be insulated

before it's time.

So far it has made a difference close to 10 degrees

warmer in the shop.

Small Ring Boxes Revisited

I'm still learning the ways of the internet. Our web

site gets very little traffic, but this blog is receiving

quite a bit of traffic. I'm changing that with the help

of our new web host. It seems Google doesn't like

the JavaScript that Apple iWeb uses When the

Google Bot comes a crawling.

So when someone is looking for "Small Ring Boxes"

this blog gets noticed first. It's Google powered you

know. I've gotten a couple of sales from people

finding this blog, then linking to our site via the right

sidebar.

Here is a bunch of the most inexpensive items I make.

These are business card holders and they sell for $7.00.

These are another thing I make using scraps from other

projects. This is done because when I go to the wood

store, I go with an ounce of gold and my first born. In

other words, wood is expensive.

As Promised ... Finished Small Ring Box

Well I started with 80 of these little guys, but the handwriting

was on the wall. If I was to try and finish them all they wouldn't

be done by the first show which was last weekend. A few days

before crunch time, I was able finish 20 of the 80, and to the

first show in Kings Beach they went.

New Band Saw Update . . . .

Well we left off with me explaining how after all

of the fan fare I realized there were two sizes for

this saw. The saw in the previous post had a

cutting capacity of only 3 5/8" (from the table to

the guides above). It seems I was looking at one

and the store owner and I were ordering the other.

The one I wanted had a 4 5/8" cutting capacity.

After reordering the right size and installing the

table (yes Christopher) on the new one, it's time

to go to work. Pictured below is the saw. Also

below is a teeny, tiny box I make. This is what

I had in mind when I bought the saw.

This has been rough sanded. Next is to final sand to 400 grit

and apply the Tung Oil finish. Then it will be waxed

to a mirror finish. We'll have to show that the next time around.

Have You Ever Wondered ?

Where babies come from ... well not if you're

my age. What a miracle reproduction of life is.

In Jr. college I had a zoology teacher that used

to demonstrate how amazing it was by telling

how great it would be to park your Chevy in

the garage at night. In the morning go out to

that garage and be surprised by a new Corvette

parked next to it's parent the Chevy.

Well, what's this leading to? Check out what

my band saw did.

Oh OK, I got this baby band saw to take care of

some of the real small stuff I make. That big band

saw was just to much work when it was time to

change blades from 3/4" wide to 1/8" wide. Plus

those damn blades cost $27.00 for the big saw,

and &11.00 for the small. I go through about

three a year. The new saw was $200.00, so in

about four years it will pay for itself.

Busy, Busy, Busy in Snow Country

I haven't forgotten you out there. I've been shoveling

snow almost everyday for about a month. It's gotten

to the point where there is almost no place to put it.

My inventory is going to suffer I'm sure, but I'm

going to do my best for the shows that start at the

end of June. Our Schedule for 2011 is posted at

A Quick Look At Bowl Turning

This is a very general over view of the process I go

through when I make a bowl.

I keep referring to an "Endplate" in the video. The proper

name is "Faceplate". The name "Endplate" is left over

from my telephone company days, and it has to do

with a splice case ... oh well.

A Woodworkers Work Is Never Done

These are frames for my daughter in law Kat.

She is an artist who is listed on our links page

of our site. She will put canvas on these frames

and paint a painting that is made up of many

small frames that measure 8” X 8” square. I

can’t wait to see it.

YUP another Double-Double Dovetail Jewelry Box …

Purple Heart and Maple

I make a lot of jewelry boxes with the main wood Maple

and the trim Purple Heart. One is in the main signature

photo on our web site. One day while pondering a

Red Heart and Wenge box, I asked the little woman what

she thought of a Purple Heart body and Maple trim.

She said, “Dude! Go for it!” She almost never calls

me Dude, so I knew I had to do it.

The inside is also pictured here. I used Maple for the

tray and dividers. The tray sits on a runner front and

back. They are, however, glued into the tray. The ladies

like to pick up the tray by the dividers.

I couldn't help myself. I just had to make a red

and black Jewelry Box.

The red wood is called Red Heart from South

America, and the black is Wenge from West

Africa. These are the natural colors of these

woods. As usual I do not use any stains. If I

want a box to be a curtain color, I'll use a curtain

wood. One of you out there was with me when I

bought this wood. I warned you ... here it is. I also
used a little different style of handle.

The Last Show of the Season

Ah yes, this was the wrap up show of the summer arts and craft show season in the mountains. There were actually three shows in the north end of Lake Tahoe this Labor Day Weekend. There were also three at the south end of the lake I believe. At the north end we had Kings Beach, Northstar, and Downtown Truckee, which is where we were.

The show was an average recession show for us. At closing on Monday at 5:00 PM, you couldn’t wipe the smiles off of Sue’s and my faces. Now it’s time to build our inventories.

The Day In The Life Of A Divider II

We left off putting the strips for the dividers through the thickness planer. After these strips are milled down to 1/8 inch thick, we’re done. We then move to the table saw where the dividers are cut to length and notched so they fit together.

Pictured here above is table saw and my after market miter gauge on top of it. You can see the blade coming up through the yellow zero clearance insert. These four dividers have been cut to length and the slots added.

Here are the dividers on the non-skid mat ready for sanding. These are the dividers for the box in the beginning of part one.

Here are the dividers after sanding and put together. They will not be glued together so they can removed or rearranged.

The finish has just been applied and the dividers are drying. After they sit over night, they will be ready for installation. I hope this helps you understand the process.

The Day In The Life Of A Divider

I’m going to do my best to show you how I make the dividers for my jewelry boxes. It took me years to develop the method and finished product you’ll see here. The photograph above is a finished Medium Striped Lid Jewelry Box with the dividers installed. Below will be the construction process.

This tool is a Jointer and in most woodworking shops a project starts here. This tool creates a straight edge that is 90 degrees to the sides. When I make dividers I will prepare both edges.

I then cut a 3/16” wide strip on the band saw with the jointed edge against the rip fence. The black object is a feather board. It’s used to keep the wood tight against the rip fence.

Here are a bunch of strips after the band saw process.

This tool is a planer and it’s used to take the pieces down to 1/8” thick. It gives me a smooth face parallel to the edge that was created on the jointer. The rest of this process will be completed in the next post.

First Show of the Season

Our first show was in Kings Beach, CA. It was held from June 25th to June 27th. We skipped Memorial Day Weekend this year as part of our cutting back on the amount of shows we do this year. The venue for this show is right on the beach of Lake Tahoe. We will be doing only two shows here this year. The photos here will show you what a great place it is the “work”.

Big Tool For A Little Job ~ The Band Saw

If you remember the last post, a ring box was cut apart.

It was sitting on the table top of this band saw. This saw

is 7 feet tall, and if you look closely, you’ll see that little

ring box. That’s why I say a big tool for a little job.

The blade is one continuous small steel band. The blade

for this saw is 111 inches long. That’s over 9 feet long.

It rides on two wheels. One above the table and one below.

They remotely resemble bicycle wheels and tires.

80 Ring Boxes Ready For Birth

The last entry we left the mighty trees ready to give birth

or go to seed. Enough silliness about these boxes. Here are

80 Large Ring Boxes ( my second largest size ) ready to be

cut on the band saw and glued together. These are at the

point were I work on 10 at a time. This is quite a process

and I’ll post some photos on that as I go along.

Pen Making Made Easy # 2

After the glue is allowed to sit all night, it’s time to “square up” the blank. The tool you see in the top photo is used for this. The thin part towards the bottom is inserted into the brass tube. The thicker part is then turned in the drill and cuts the wood square to the brass tube. This is why the wood blank was cut to a 1/16” longer than the brass tube. In the photo below, you can see the cutting portion riding on the blank.

Pen Making Made Easy

Pictured in the last entry are the style of roller ball pens I make. The next couple of entries here will be dedicated to the construction of these pens. You never know, maybe some of you will want to follow in my foot steps. Pen making is by far the most relaxing woodworking activity I’m involved in. When you come home from work, turning a pen is as good as that cocktail ... honest.

Pictured above is a 3/4” square piece of Zebra Wood. It is held in place so a 10 millimeter hole can be drilled through it length wise. The piece of wood is cut 1/16” longer than the 10 millimeter brass tube supplied with the pen kit. There are two of these brass tubes with each kit. After the drilling is complete, the tube is epoxied inside of the hole. I let this sit over night before I work with it.

Finished Wooden Banks

Hello there, this is the final part to the

construction of my banks. We last left

off gluing the four sides together. I

believe I discussed the sanding process

to make the corners smooth. Well that

isn't done until the top is glued on and

the bottom is screwed into place.

Pictured here is a top having the slot milled

into it. This I do before I glue it to the four

sides. If you look at the fence pictured here

you'll see the two stop blocks on either side

of the top. They determine how long the slot

will be. An 1/8 inch router bit is used.

Here are all the banks all put together and

ready for sanding. I do this on my belt

sander that is six inches wide.

OK, here are a couple of finished

banks. They have a few coats of

lacquer on them.

After the Wood is Milled

I use this little contraption called an Incra Jig

to make the box joint corners. As you can see

I create these joints on two sides of 5 boxes

at the same time. Most methods used can only

make one half of one corner at a time. Using

this method, I can do 10 half corners at a time.

Time is money .... it helps keep my prices

down.

Three passes of the sides have been completed here.

The cuts are made when the sides pushed at that

green router bit. The whole thing rides on the fence

to the left. The fence is ready to be moved again

for the next cut.

Here are all of the sides of 4 banks.

Here are the four sides glued together. They

are left a little long on purpose. When all

six sides are put together, they will be

sanded smooth.

Milling The Wood For Banks

So many of my boxes, and in this case banks,

require 3/8" and 1/4" thick stock. I could

buy these dimensioned woods at a very high

price, or mill them to size myself. To keep my

costs down, I do it myself.

The wood I start with is called, in the trade,

4/4 (pronounced four quarter) or 1 inch before

it's milled down to 13/16". If I'm careful, I can

get two pieces out of this. 1 at 3/8" (plus 1/16")

and 1 at 1/4" (plus 1/16"). The band saw blade

eats up 1/16" also. Add them all up and you

get 13/16". I then put them through a planner

to get the final thickness.

Custom Thank You Gift - Humidor

Someone showed our family a lot of generosity and kindness in a very big time of need. We had a very personal family tragedy strike us and this individual showed he was made of a lot of class. So in return I've put a lot of love in the construction of this humidor. I actually started my designs with humidors. The fad died down and I switched to Jewelry Boxes.

This humidor is larger than my jewelry boxes.
It is constructed of Cherry and Peruvian Walnut
and it measures 16"x11"x5".

I Hate Custom Orders

Ah but, here one is. Don't get me wrong, they do help
pay the bills. As in this case though, I could only
make one. When I make a box of this type I usually
make 10 or 12. This way I'm not spending half my
time setting up a machine to do a task for one box.
My stuff is priced in such a way that one box at a
time is a loser.

Here are a couple of pictures of a custom recipe box.
I usually make them for 3" x 5" cards. This was requested
to fit 4" x 6" cards. I forgot to take pictures until I had it
all glued up as pictured here. I'll do better next time.

Second Show In Tahoe City, California

Oh well, they all can't be great. Schools were back in session this last week. Some were saying that's why the attendance and sales were down the weekend of August 28th to August 30th. I say it's the economy stupid, and the weekend before was a fluke.

This next weekend (Labor Day) we're home in downtown Truckee. This will be the first of, hopefully, many to come in the future.

Great Show At Tahoe City, California

Hi All, What a great place for an Arts and Crafts Show. We were right on the water in Tahoe City which is on the north shore of Lake Tahoe. This was supposed to be one of our Homewood shows, but it had to be moved at the last minute. The new owner of Homewood couldn't see himself having a successful paying event. So at the last minute our promoter found out Homewood was a no-go. The people of Tahoe City found this out and grabbed on to us. They've wanted and arts and craft show of their own for 20 years ... since they had their last one. Our promoter is known to be one of the best in country, so Tahoe City got the best of both worlds.

They rewarded us (Sue and I) by giving us our best show this year ... gross sales wise. Sunday set a new sales record high for one day in the history of Dust'n Lint. THANK YOU TAHOE CITY!

Great Shows (all the time) Would Be Boring OR ....

A fellow artist sent these to us. They are photos of our booth at the Summit Mall in Reno. Notice two things ... those giant blue barrels (55 gallon drums) and the lack of people. The blue barrels were loaned to us by the Summit Mall. This should have been our first clue this was to be an exciting show. Those blue drums were full of water and each weighing 440 pounds. I travel to these shows with four 40 pound buckets of concrete of my own. That put the weights for our booth at 1040 pounds total for this weekend. Every pound was needed the first two days ... damn that's a windy place.

Sue and I learned many years ago that you don't do arts and crafts shows in Reno. This show was supposed to take place in Homewood at Lake Tahoe, but it had to be moved at the last minute. We should have pulled out, but we thought we would give Reno another chance. The people of Reno are not art buyers. In 7 years, this was our worst show ever ... Oh Well !

Life is full of secrets, and my web site has one. Back in the catacombs of our site is “Odie’s Wood Works”. This is something I created to pass on my secrets to fellow woodworkers. It’s password protected, and the password is only given out to a select few. Seven people in all have it at this time. You see, my son Tom has no interest at all in woodworking. Maybe down the road that might change, but for now I’m passing on what I know (50 years worth) to just a few. It just seems silly not to share what I took a lifetime to learn. As long as I sell my work, I think this is the best way to do it.

The Sidewalk Painting Festival at Crystal Bay, Nv.

The first picture below is of Sunday Morning. You can see the washed out sidewalk paintings on the asphalt. You see the rain came the afternoon before at about 5:00 PM. It was a real gully washer. Some "paintings" where completely gone and some were only faded. They have two days to finish their pastel drawings, and some were finished the day before. These people got to do it all over again. Most of the artists were in good spirits and trudged forward on Sunday. Below are some of the results. Don't ask how we did ......

What Is It ?

I belong to a woodworking club online and it's called "LumberJocks". This club has over 10,000 members world wide. I started a little game there called "What is it ?". HOW DID YOU DO ?

This is a drying rack for my box halves after spaying them with lacquer. The design makes it very easy to get the box half on the rack leaving plenty of room between the uprights for my hand.

Northstar At Tahoe

These are the cobblestone canyons that is the resort at Northstar. Northstar is competing with Squaw Valley for the most prestigious destination ski resort at Lake Tahoe. I've seen both and Northstar wins!

Another Day Of Realizing What I Have

After you live somewhere for thirty years, you forget what you have. Here is a collection of photos of the arts and crafts show and the surrounding views. This weekend (6/26-6/28) we are at Kings Beach (Lake Tahoe), California. We live in Truckee, which is only 10 miles away. I worked for 30 years for the telephone company and 23 of those years at Lake Tahoe and Truckee. It was not unusual to be 20 feet up a pole working and looking at these same views. I have been so blessed to live here and experience all of this ... even the winters. You see, I did have an outside job.

My Shop During ARTour

This is what my shop looks like during ARTour. Artour is a local event where the public is given maps to artists studios, one weekend, in order to watch the artist create. I set up my mini lathe behind a plexi-glass shield to protect the visitors. They watch me turn small bowls and wooden pens.

Can you see that "street sign" in the background ? It always gets a good chuckle.

Here are Sue's quilts as you would see them upon entering our booth. On the left are the baby quilts, and on the right are the decorative quilts. Her quilts are also displayed around the top edges of the booth.

Our First Arts and Crafts Show of the Year

This is our typical set up. Our first show was in Kings Beach, California on Memorial Day Weekend. Kings Beach is on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe. Normally this is held in Truckee, but the crowds have been way down there. The Promoter decided to move it this year. The crowds were there, but now we have to convince them that the economy is OK.

We are asked quite often, "Why don't you come to our town to do a show". With that I always give my standard answer, "I don't need to ... you're here". It's great being able to be in a show in a tourist resort.

And to the sewing machine the three layers of the quilt go for quilting. In the middle here Sue is stitching in the "ditch". She is following the pattern in the fabrics. The blue around the border will get a random swirl pattern. This will become a small decorative hanging quilt complete with a hanging sleeve in the top back.

Hello on a beautiful Monday evening. Above is a quilt in progress. If you look closely, you will see the special safety pins Sue uses to hold the three layers in place. The three layers are the “pieced” top, the batting in the middle, and the back. This quilt is a small decorative hanging quilt.

The Finished Tiled Salad Bowl

As you can see, there is something similar about this post and the last post. Can you see it? Look closely ... this is the same bowl as the previous one. You have sort of before and after pictures posted here. I put that mess posted before on the lathe and turned it. Hitting all those corners with my gauge makes a heck of a racket in the shop. Once all those corners are gone, it's smooth sailing from then on ... or until I start the inside. This bowl measures 13" X 6" and is treated and designed as a food safe salad bowl.

Be Alert ... Not a "LERT"

I’m coining a new word here boys and girls.
LERT = someone that is not alert. And I are one too !

We all know when “IT” happens, we’re usually doing something repetitive and get hypnotized by the moment. I was cutting pieces for a tiled bowl. They’re always cut at 22.5 degrees and these were 40 in number at 5 1/8” in length. To be honest, I’m not exactly sure how “IT” happened, but the piece passed the table saw blade and went flying in two pieces. I usually grab the pieces after they pass the blade then pull the meter gauge back to the starting position. I think I may have tried to do both at the same time. The result was all hell done broke lose.

The aftermath was a bent blade, a meter gauge that had to be completely re-calibrated, a piece of a project in two pieces, and a wife that came running in shock to see if I was alright. The noise of the action and me yelling Odie's favorite word brought Sue very quickly. And yes, I still have all my fingers.

So, be ALERT out there … not a “LERT” like me.

Hi There, here is a weed pot made of Canary Wood. It is used to hold arrangements of Dried Flowers. This is what I've been working on the last couple of weeks (many, not just this one). Now I will start on tiled bowls as pictured below.

Good Morning to All, I'm new to this "blog thing", so you'll have to be patient with me. I thought I could give you a small sample of what I do. The picture is of me turning a bowl on the lathe. The coveralls are to keep me warm (it's 40 degrees in the shop). The face mask is for protection. It also has a built in ventilation system to keep it from fogging up. And the earphones are NOT for ear protection. They are so I can hear my favorite tunes while turning. I sign my work, "ODIE"
